Background
Hi, I am ZONG Baoyu. My PhD, Master and Bachelor degrees are obtained from NUS (Chem & Bio Eng), University of South Australia and Xiamen University, respectively. The main courses for me are Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, have worked in industry companies and Data Storage Institute for more than 20 years. The interested areas are functional magnetic & semi-/conductive materials, useful nano-polymers & -devices, green energy & environmental technologies. The hobbies of me are reading, tennis, jogging and travelling.

Specialised Expertise

    • Preparation of magnetic soft nanofilms with ultra-soft (Hc down to 0.03 Oe), or high magnetic moment (Ms up to 2.43 T), or large magnetic permeability (µ up to 1800) & frequency (fr  up to 7 GHz);
    • Fabrication of 5-300 nm functional multilayer metallic nano-sensors & -devices with nanofilm deposition, nanolithography, and dry- or wet-etching;
    • Synthesis of functional metallic, semi-conductive & carbonic 0-3D nanostructures via chemical synthesis, or electrolessplating, electrodeposition, plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition, sputtering, evaporation and annealing;
    • Manufacture of smart 0-3D conductive & magnetic colloidal nano-structures/-sensors; 
    • Production of ultra-low dielectric constant polymer nanostructures;
    • Polymer and thin film coating, peelable and interface studying;
    • Nanostructures-related characterization techniques: FESEM/EDX/TEM/FIB analyses, Surface resonance spectroscopy, Quartz crystal microbalance, Electromagnetic waveguide spectroscopy, X-ray Reflectomerty, XPS/ToFSIMS/Raman spectroscopy, etc.;
    • Theoretical design & construction of uniform crystal nano-films & -structures.
    • First approach to a polymer solar cell with a breakthrough open-circuit voltage of > 1.5 V via modifying electroactive polymer.

One research work is listed in IOP Publishing highlights on Nanotechnology for National University of Singapore. The work is on fabricating multilayers of ultrahigh density memory devices. One research work is posted on 2011 Research Highlighting of A*Star. The work is on Columnar CoFeNi particle-films.
2009 One R&D work was posted on 2009 Research Highlighting of A*Star. The work is on modifying commercial e-beam resists into of ultrahigh resolution and contrast.
2008 Best Poster Award - 3rd MRS-S International Conference on Advanced Materials. Poster on Current-perpendicular-to-plane spin valves for ultrahigh-density magnetic recording.

Teaching

~ 95 students from national & international universities, polytechnics and junior colleges are trained via numerous R&D projects. Amongst them, 1 student won Bronze Award of A*Star Talent Search, 2 students received Distinguishing DSI (A*Star) Student Awards, 12 students received PhD scholarships from national or international universities.
